Server
In the case of a single server, the installation is usually performed on a virtual computer (via the VMWare software) and offers the great advantage that adjustments can be made to the equipment of the virtual computer at any time.
For example, the following components of a virtual computer can be upgraded:
- Internal memory
- CPU
- Hard disk capacity
- Network connection
Since the virtualization of computers has become the current standard in IT, the majority of virtual machines are also installed on them. Needless to say, octoplant can be installed on a physical server, too.
octoplant with local archive
If the server archive is in a local directory, the project data is stored on the same computer on which octoplant is running. For disaster recovery, backup the local server archive. It contains all the important information.
octoplant with remote archive
Another option is the separation of the octoplant service from the projects managed by octoplant.
With this variant the project data is not stored on the same computer, on which the octoplant service runs, but on a remote share. The computer, on which the octoplant service runs, has for technical reasons an additional local server archive. However, it doesn’t contain any project data.
With a remote archive, the performance of a network in terms of data transfer cannot be compared to a local hard disk.
Regardless of which structure is chosen, questions about existing connections/ interfaces need to be clarified in advance. Additionally, a comparison of current and future network load is necessary. For larger dimensions in terms of company and production size, a network model can be helpful. This gives a first indication of what exactly is needed or which add-ons would bring an additional benefit.
