KB-132870: Updating the server

Updating the server

The server update does not differentiate between server installations with and without client. The update process is always the same. The server and client updates are performed in two separate steps.

Note

The connected agents are updated automatically (when the service is started for the first time) during the server update.

Requirements for server update

  • All versiondog processes need to be closed.
  • The data of the server archive in the local directory or on the remote share needs to be saved.
  • The file Setup.exe must be executed on the server with administrator rights.
  • The user account that is being used for the setup needs to have full access rights to the following directories:
    • versiondog program directory
    • Local server archive and remote server archive (if remote server archive present)
  • The drive used for storing the server archive must allow files to run. Any existing security policies that prevent the execution of the files must be deactivated. If the execution of files is not allowed, an error message (SQL Exception) will be displayed later when logging on to the system. A login is then not possible.

Proceed as follows

  1. Start the setup on the computer intended for the update by double clicking on the file Setup.exe provided in the versiondog software package. The installation wizard will then be started.
  2. Select a language. German and English are currently available.
  3. On the welcome page of the setup wizard, click on Next.
  4. If any versiondog processes are running, this will be displayed here. End the displayed processes by clicking Next.If the processes cannot be stopped via the installation wizard, end them via the Windows Task Manager.
  5. Select the option Install versiondog applications and then click on Next.

  1. A dialogue will appear, telling you that a versiondog server is already installed. Click on Update to carry out the server update.
  2. In the next step, you will be asked to create a backup of your server archive or to confirm that you have already created a backup of the server archive. A backup is required because a data migration is performed during the update, during which the server archive can be damaged and data can be lost.

  4. Confirm the path to the directory of the versiondog server applications by clicking on Next. For octoplant, the TCP port 64023 is required. If you run an update from an older versiondog version than 9.5, you will see a notification that this port must be enabled. Confirm the notification by entering the required text.
  5. Windows XP Professional SP3, Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2003 are for octoplant as of versiondog version 9.0. When updating from an older versiondog version, a note is displayed in the setup. This contains a link to a detailed list of what you can do if you have older operating systems in use. Read the text carefully and, if necessary, confirm it by entering “I understand” in the input field.

](../ServerInstalloctoplant_ImagesServerinstall_Setup_Message.png)If you have one or more BackupClients in use, we strongly recommend synchronizing them before a server update. Since the PostgreSQL database is updated during the update, synchronization is not possible afterwards and local changes may be lost. After the server update, update the BackupClients as usual before you use them.

  2. The server update will begin. A notification will indicate when the update process is complete. !!! note A database migration is performed during the update. This can take some time, especially for large archives. A progress bar will be displayed.

  3. After the server has been successfully updated, click on Finish and close the wizard

Note

If you use gateways, they must also be updated after a successful server update.
