Mode of operation

Upload and compare agents are installed on a client PC via a separate setup. For an agent to communicate with the server over TCP/IP and carry out tasks after installation, you must first configure certain settings on the server in the AdminClient. This specifies the IP address of the client on which the agent is installed and the ports.

These tasks must be either manually started in the client applications or created as jobs.

• If the task is executed manually, the client application transfers the data required for the task via the server to the agent, which executes the task and sends the results back to the application via the server.
• During automatic job execution, the time-controlled scheduler of the versiondog server evaluates the configuration of the job and sends a job to the corresponding agent at the specified times. This then processes the job by backing up data and carrying out a comparison. As soon as the agent has completed its task, it will send a message to the server that the relevant data are ready.

The following should be noted for manual execution:

• The following tasks can be outsourced from the client applications: backup and backup comparison, version and version comparison, backup and version comparison, working directory comparison.
• The communication between client application and compare agent is not direct, but always through the server. This means that both the machine on which the client application is installed and the machine on which the agent is installed must be accessible to the server. Therefore, compare agents cannot be used with local login in the client application and in the BackupClient in general.
• The limits on the maximum number of jobs and comparisons that can be executed simultaneously also include the number of comparisons handled by client applications via agents.
• It is not possible to execute client scripts if the task has been transferred from a client application to an agent. Server scripts are executed as normal.
• It is not possible to transfer the data to the agent when comparing components which a standard block has been assigned to.
