KB-133157: Creating differential images

Creating differential images

The Image Service can be used to create differential backups in addition to complete images.

  • With a complete image, all the data to be backed up is saved each time.
  • With a differential backup, only the data that has been changed or added since the last full backup is backed up. Differential backups always belong to a previously created image.

Note

You can only create differential backups if you store the image on the network drive, in other words, if you have

selected one of the transfer paths Device -> Data storage or Device -> Temporary data storage -> Data Storage.

To create differential backups, proceed as follows:

  1. In the Job configuration section Differential backup, check the Differential backups checkbox
    1. Image: Job Configuration, section Differential backup
    2. In the Max. differential backups dropdown list, you can set how many differential backups are to be created between two complete images. The default value is 7. If the job to create an image runs once a day, then (with configuration) a full image would be created once a week and differential backups on the remaining days of the week.

The value entered in the Number of retained backups (rollover) field during job configuration refers only to complete images. When an older complete image is overwritten by a new one, the associated differential backups are also deleted.

For example: to create a month’s worth of security coverage with daily expiring jobs, set the number of differential backups to 7 and the number of retained backups to 4.
